The Tajikistan government is claiming the quality of tap water in Tajikistan is satisfactory. However, both the residents and foreign tourists have been finding out differently. The low quality of water has been an issue for quite some time in Tajikistan and many residents have begun to become very frustrated with the lack of basic amenities in their homes. When a visitor arrives in Tajikistan, there is no doubt that the first thing they are going to notice are the incredibly low prices charged at many hotels, as well as the incredibly poor quality of the hotels.

In some areas, such as Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the citizens have begun to build makeshift filtration systems in order to provide clean tap water to their guests and residents. Never drink the water from the tap, nor use the water to brush your teeth. Always wash fresh produce, especially when bought from the local bazaar. Some melons—although they are incredibly fresh and sweet—can be irrigated and fertilized with manure, so sometimes washing them will not help. As a rule of thumb all foreigners from developed countries will get sick at least once while in Tajikistan, but this can be delayed by avoiding unwashed/unpeeled fruits and vegetables (be especially wary of this in restaurants).
