Can You Drink Tap Water in Chon Buri?

Recently, I had a chance to travel to Phuket, a popular tourist destination in Thailand, and pay a visit to the "Green Paradise." The title of that phrase refers to the clear blue (or green) water of the Andaman Sea. The area is considered to be one of the most ecologically diverse places in all of Asia, and it is home to an incredible variety of marine life.
One of the things that I really enjoyed was the local flavor of the Tap Water from Chon Buri. Much of the local water has been treated with chlorine and other chemicals, to help prevent algae and other contaminants from taking hold. This is a great step forward toward cleaner tap water quality standards, but the fact that many of the treated water was back in the water system a few days later was disconcerting to me. The FDA warns that the disinfection methods used in the treatment of most municipal water can cause cancer. I''ve since learned that the same applies to tap water in Thailand.
