Recently, I''ve been asked to conduct an inquiry regarding tap water quality in Colombia. This area is experiencing an outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases that have been blamed on the spread of unsafe tap water. In order to get an impartial assessment of the situation, I contacted a private company based in Medellin, Colombia. The first question I was asked was "What is your company''s assessment of the quality of tap water in the community in Medellin?"

After initially struggling to find a response, I was offered a detailed answer by a woman who explained that her company had a contract with the Colombian government to test all water sources in the town. The results were delivered to the head of the local environmental management service. I was offered three samples, each representing a different stage of water deterioration. The highest ranking sample represented the "rawest" sample of water that could be obtained from the pipes.
