When I got off the plane in Lublin, Poland a few months ago, I was extremely excited. As a trained physician I had heard about the great health benefits of water filtered to remove heavy metals and other impurities. I knew that I could take a sample of my own to test the quality and purity of the water. And I also knew that I would be able to buy some tap water online from an inexpensive source in New York City.

I had no idea that there are so many contaminants in tap water in America! It seems that anyone who travels to an industrialized country can easily become infected with a variety of ailments, because the medical infrastructure is not as advanced as it might be. There are still primitive primary health facilities and public hospitals in many third world countries. These facilities may lack the sophisticated equipment that we take for granted in the United States. In some cases, people are left to fend for themselves when they fall ill.
