Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Jelenia Gora, a village in Eastern Poland. It is not as populated as say, Sopot or Warsaw but it is a thriving community nonetheless. I was there to conduct ecological research on local lakes and its relationship with the public health.
During my visit, the first thing that struck me were the vivid orange trees that lined up the lake''s bank. The people of Jelenia Gora live mainly on a breadline. They use small-sized collective farms for grazing cattle. Fresh water comes from underground springs; clean drinking water trickles through metal faucets and waste pipes. And because they are poor, the people have little to no access to clean tap water.
The majority of inhabitants live off what they can harvest on the communal lands. The water from these streams and rivers is clean enough but not safe enough to drink. Many people use this water to cook with or as fertilizer. It is not safe to take a bath with untreated
