Can You Drink Tap Water in Amman?

No, tap water is not drinkable.

Generally, tap water in Amman, Jordan, is safe to drink. The drinking water in Jordan is governed by Jordanian Standard 286. The quality control complies with the World Health Organization standards for drinking water.

After a few studies, it showed that different freshwater sources that were managed by the government showed water quality complied with the national physiochemical standards. More than 90% of water samples from residence storage tanks in Amman passed the WHO recommendation for fresh drinking water.

For some, drinking tap water in a short period is a risk that a person can take. A small percentage that water from the tanks isn’t safe, especially on public tap. You can boil water or use water purification tablets. In high star hotels, they are using their purification to ensure the safety of their guests.

The primary source of tap water in Amman, Jordan, is from surface water. Surface water of Jordan River and the Yarmouk River specifically supply waters to the country. The two rivers also provide water to Syria and Israel.

In July 2013, they opened the Disi aquifer in the city of Amman. It increases possible resources by about 12%. The plan is to bridge the gap between demand and supply by increasing the use of reclaimed water and desalinated seawater from the Red Sea-Dead Sea canal.

Notwithstanding the low availability of water, more than 97% of Jordanians have access to an upgraded water source, and 93% have access to modernized sanitation. At these rates, they have the most significant improvement in the middle east and north America.
